The stories of the six stories in the four volumes of The Great Divide are a long-standing part of Australian and European history. All of the stories are significant and their power and impact in shaping the political, cultural and social structure of Australia is immense. Some stories are historical fact, while others are fiction and of varying degree of truthfulness. They are not subject to easy assessment or easy interpretation. All have been read and studied by Australians and Europeans alike. This film, which does not attempt to provide a definitive account of the events, instead concentrates on the meaning of the stories. The film opens with an interview with Governor General Sir Henry Sydenham. He tells the story of a brutal and violent battle in which a regimental Australian company was sent to New Guinea to aid a French colonial army. Their mission was to serve as the soldiers in the French army in the battle and thus relieve the French of the burden of defending New Guinea. The colony was ultimately taken by the French and the colony itself was given to the United Kingdom. The company was not sent as a French colonial army, but as Australian soldiers and was actually disbanded after the Battle of Batavia. The stories are interspersed throughout the film. The film focuses on the stories of two women. These are the stories of Margaret Lavery, an Australian soldier who helped the British defend New Guinea and was sent by the British to assist the French, and her wife, Ella, who was a pioneer in Australia and was killed in a siege of a settlement. The film shows them in several short films which are made by different directors. The films provide a narrative of the events, their aftermath and the character and personality of the women. It is a powerful narrative, and well worth watching. It is a gripping and absorbing film that captures the strength and power of the stories and the nature of the events.
