I recently came across this film on the movies page for the Seattle Film Festival and was immediately drawn into it. It's one of the most beautiful and inspiring films I have ever seen. The story is set in the early 1900s, where a handful of miners lead by Gabrielle (Shirley MacLaine) encounter a lone explorer, Captain Horace Mann (William Hurt), on a treacherous stretch of river. This is a classic coming of age story, which is never boring and there is always something happening. The main story involves Mann, Gabrielle and the young girl (Frances McDormand) who will be their daughter. Gabrielle is sick and tired of her father's strictness and the harsh conditions of the mine. The explorers are extremely passionate about their quest to find the lost city of gold. Mann, the charismatic and caring explorer, shows her the truth about what the miners are going through. Horace Mann, the more reserved explorer, feels that there is a more important quest to be pursued and is willing to compromise himself for the explorers. The film was filmed in a beautiful and poetic way. The images of the river and the explorers are spectacular. The film is filled with beautiful music and the photography is extremely beautiful. The acting is top notch and MacLaine shines as the "bad girl" of the film. MacLaine is one of the few actors I could name who can carry a movie, but she really excels in this role. This film really gets my attention. It's one of those films that I'm sure will appeal to both men and women. Everyone should watch this film.

Liam Neeson is great in this film. But his character, "Bill", was a bit over the top. "Bill" is an Indian, and although it would be easier to believe that he had been born in the USA, the fact is that he came from England and was raised in a British boarding school. If this were true, he would be a perfect candidate for a boarding school, because he would be learning English and being taught everything there. However, he wasn't a great English speaker, and at the beginning of the film he is too scared to say that he is a native of the USA, because it will ruin his chances of getting into one. He could say that he is from England, but he would still have been embarrassed to say that. Anyway, I think that the director did a great job in making Bill into a great character. I especially liked his voice. I thought that he sounded very British. The best thing about this film is the performances of Robert Duvall, Tom Sizemore, and Natalie Portman. They all did a great job. I also liked the way that they tried to make Bill a good guy. He is not really evil, but he is definitely not a good guy. The only good thing about the film was the music, which was pretty good. However, I think that the music is a little bit over the top. It is a bit too much like classical music. It just gets a little bit annoying. But anyway, I think that the film is worth watching. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes movies that are not over the top. The acting is good, the story is good, and the music is good. It is definitely a film that you would like to watch. Rating 4.5/5.
