Michael Beck (Sidney Poitier) is a distinguished jazz pianist who, during the 1960s, left his New York apartment and relocated to the country outside Washington, D.C. where he cultivated a strong following. After a decade of disenchantment with his life in New York, he decided to embark on a solo tour in order to regain his lost life. After his group of musicians played to a packed house at the Biltmore Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina, Beck said, "I don't know what I'm doing here anymore. I'm not even sure I want to be there anymore." By the end of the show, Beck was ready to head back to New York and "go home" and forget about his past. This was a remarkable, moving, and often touching story of a man who left his "baddies" behind to pursue a life of personal freedom. We are given the impression that the young Beck was not particularly fond of his New York environment and was content with his modest, but self-sufficient life in the country. In the end, he was left with a deeply felt sense of abandonment and betrayal by the people in his life. He made the decision to go back to New York and find his former life and the people that had made him a star. The film then follows his journey back to New York, where he returns to his old band, the Bobby Womack Quartet. The album "Bobby Womack" was a masterpiece of jazz. The film then follows his return to the Biltmore Hotel to play with the musicians who had made him a star. The film ends with Beck in a New York concert hall, making his return to New York. This was a powerful film. It is an excellent portrait of a man who was left behind by his old friends and their "baddies." The film was a true story. The music was superb. The story of the band and the man who was the heart and soul of it all was compelling. I highly recommend this film for anyone who is interested in music or life. I recommend it highly. I give this film an A.
